OWL CITY – COCO MOON (QUICK ALBUM REVIEW)

Coco Moon is the 7th studio album from Iowa-born electronic pop musician Adam Young. Like his previous studio album Cinematic released in 2018, this latest record is very autobiographical in nature, particularly on the opening track Adam, Check Please. It also feels like a throwback at times to his Ocean Eyes album with many references to the beach and the ocean. Will Coco Moon set the world on fire? No. Will it win over new fans? Probably not. It’s trademark Owl City with all its quirks, playfulness, youthful charm and relentless positivity.

I did find some of the intros/outros did drag out a bit too much with most of the tracks bloating out past the 5 minute mark. But when the album works, it strikes gold. There’s laid back synths, tropical island vibes, catch guitar riffs and lovely strings. I also enjoyed the female backing vocals on several of the tracks including Sons of Thunder and Vitamin Sea. It will certainly make most Owl City fans satisfied.

Standout Tracks: Adam, Check Please, Under the Circus Lights, Kelly Time, Sons of Thunder, Vitamin Sea, Dinosaur Park, Learn How to Surf.
