DRIVEN TO THE VERGE – TRANSITIONS (ALBUM REVIEW)

I’ve been supporting this Melbourne-based melodic metalcore band for the best part of 3 years now, which is almost the amount of time they’ve spent working on this debut album entitled “Transitions”. There have been a number of barriers preventing them from releasing it at an earlier date including line-up changes, a focus on touring and playing regular local shows. But the delays have clearly been a benefit to the band as this record sounds more polished and better produced than the original single releases.

The album contains early singles “Rule Breaker” and “Absent Eyes” as well as their more recent singles “What You’ve Become” and “Skybound” which features clean vocals from Thomas Pirozzi of Sienna Skies. There is a delicate balance and a consistent flow to this record with the use of fades, soft melodic sections, strings, heavy breakdowns, bouncy guitar riffs and roaring screams. Ursula Kay also adds some lovely keyboard flourishes to several tracks, giving them a lighter side like on the title track “Transitions”.

Lead vocalist Luke Barrows transitions well between harsh screamed vocals and passionate clean vocals espeically on “Rule Breaker” and “What You’ve Become”. Lyrically, the album deals with the process of transformation and learning from past mistakes to become a better person. It also focuses on being grateful for what you have and realising that it’s not too late to make positive changes in your life. Overall this is a really tight album and well worth the wait!
